Mass. House passes bill promoting mixed martial arts

World Championship Fighting Sept 26 8-31-09 v3Mass. House passes bill promoting mixed martial arts

By Sarah Thomas, Sun Correspondent

BOSTON — It all happens in less than five seconds. The fighters have been circling like dancers, exchanging feints and quick, vicious shin kicks. Then suddenly, Mike Campbell’s gloved fist shoots out, catching Rich Moskowitz on the ear. A flurry of rabbit punches later, and Campbell’s hands are raised triumphantly.

This was a 2008 bout in the sport known as mixed martial arts, or MMA; a blend of Jeet Kune Do, wrestling, boxing and street brawling that eschews chair hits and pageantry associated with professional wrestling. Standard & Poor’s has rated mixed martial arts fighting as a multibillion-dollar business.

Mike Campbell takes out Medrano in WCF 8

By Mark Daniels / Mixed Martial Arts
Sunday, September 27, 2009 –

WILMINGTON – Before his World Championship Fighting bout at the Shriners Auditorium last night, Mike Campbell likened himself to one of those toy monkey-drummers.

As most fighters were getting amped up for their bouts, Campbell was even keeled. He likes to remain on the same level before a fight, he said, like the wind-up toy.

His energy conserved, Campbell exploded on opponent Mike Medrano, dropping him with a flying knee and following up with a flurry of punches until the referee stopped the fight at 3:12 of the first round. Read the rest of this entry »

WILMINGTON, Mass. — Mike Campbell came home to do penance for an underwhelming campaign in World Extreme Cagefighting.

He was successful.

A former power lifter who built his name on the New England mixed martial arts scene, Campbell — once featured on the “TapOut” reality show on Versus — picked up a first-round technical knockout victory in the main event of World Championship Fighting 8 on Saturday at the Aleppo Shriners Auditorium. The welterweight rebounded from two first-round losses in the WEC.

“A lot came to me fast,” said Campbell, 26, who was fighting on national television after only four professional fights. “I realize what I had, and I want it back. I have to get back on a winning streak.” Read the rest of this entry »

More fights announced for September 26th show at the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass.

John Benoit Punch

Boston Mass. September 1, 2009 – World Championship Fighting today announced  more fights for their September 26th show at the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass.
Local 7 Iron Worker, and frequent WCF Fighter John Benoit takes yet another tough fight when he takes on American Top Team’s Hitalo Machado. Benoit was very impressive in his recent win at WCF 7 over Damien Trites, and he looks to keep the train rolling against Machado. Machado makes his WCF debut, but is no stranger to the local fans. He’s a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, and is also an accomplished striker. This highly anticipated fight is sure to please.

Damien Trites will make his return to WCF after his war with John Benoit when he takes on Noah Weisman. Noah was impressive in his pro debut with WCF, beating Steve Beck by submission in the first round. Trites will be a big step up in competition for him, but Weisman is looking to get in there with the very best fighters the WCF can give him. Trites is looking for a rematch with Benoit, and a win here could set that fight up.

World Championship Fighting Announces Four Featured Bouts For September 26th, 2009

Black And white with Ring Girls
Boston Mass. August 12, 2009 – World Championship Fighting today announced four featured fights for their September 26th show at the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass.
In what promises to be a war, WEC Veteran Mike Campbell makes his return to World Championship Fighting when he takes on the ultra-tough brawler, Mike Medrano. When Campbell last fought for WCF, he was victorious in the night’s main event, knocking out Rich Moskowitz in les than 90 seconds. Both fighters have shown in their previous fights that they have the punching power to end the fight in an instant. You definitely don’t want to blink in this one!

After an unsuccessful run at the 135 pound title which snapped his five fight winning streak, Dan Bonnell moves back to his more natural weight of 145, and looks to get back to his winning ways. He is one of only two fighters to compete on every WCF card, and has gone 5-1 in the WCF. His opponent will be WCF newcomer Josh LaBerge, who recently defeated tough local fighters Frank Latina and Chris Simmons in consecutive weekends. LaBerge pushes the pace and will really bring the fight to Bonnell. No matter who wins this fight, it’s going to be action packed.

Also included on the WCF8 fight card is a grudge match between two undefeated WCF fighters. Kevin Corrigan from USMMA brings his 2-0 record (both via TKO) and heavy hands to the ring on September 26th when he takes on 4-0 Jiu-Jitsu ace Saul Almeida. Almeida was last seen defeating Dan O’Keefe by “Peruvian Necktie” at WCF 7, and he’s looking to keep to his winning ways against Corrigan.

In another featured fight, two local welterweight studs make their WCF debut. Dennis Olsen has quietly gone about his business up in NH, and seems to just keep submitting guys. He’s huge at 170 and hasn’t lost at that weight in quite some time. He’ll be taking on 7-1 Ryan Schieding. Both guys are great wrestlers, and both have great jiu-jitsu. You certainly don’t want to miss this technical battle.

On June 27, 2009 World Championship Fighting presented what many fans are calling their best fight card ever, live from the Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington, MA.

Flying Knee
On June 27, 2009 World Championship Fighting presented what many fans are calling their best fight card ever, live from the Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington, MA. While there was no marquee main event featuring fighters who already have national recognition, the card was filled with fighters ready to break into the national spotlight. As usual for WCF, the crowd was filled with a who’s who of MMA stars. UFC Fighters Jorge Rivera and John Howard joined Mark DellaGrotte, Sean Gannon and former Middleweight Boxing Champion Dana Rosenblatt were in attendance, along with actor Kevin James, who is filming a movie locally.

The night’s main event featured two of New England’s best middleweights in Woody Weatherby from Renzo Gracie NH and Dan Keefe, from Brickhouse Fight Team. The fight was a war from start to finish with Keefe controlling most of the action, and Weatherby landing the cleaner strikes. Keefe pushed the pace undeterred by the big shots from Weatherby, and was able to take the fight to the ground where he was able to grind on Weatherby and rough him up a little. As the fight wore on, it turned into battle of Weatherby attempting submissions, with Keefe escaping and making Woody pay with big shots from the top. The fight came down to the wire with Weatherby locking in his best submission of the night, an arm bar that looked to be enough to finish the fight, but Keefe was able to hold on and take the hard fought victory by decision.

The night also featured a pair of big lightweight fights that featured four exciting and popular fighters. Calvin Kattar took on undefeated Rodrigo Almeida in the night’s co-main event, and the crowd was going crazy for both fighters from start to finish. Rodrigo was able to get in tight on Kattar and avoid his devastating punching power, and for the first time Kattar was force to show his impressive wrestling and jiu-jitsu game. As Almeida was fighting hard for a takedown, Kattar was able to lock up a tight guillotine choke and pull guard for the submission victory halfway through round 1.

In the second pairing of top lightweights, John Benoit and Damien Trites put on the most exciting fight of the night, a thrilling back and forth battle that truly brought out the best in both fighters. Benoit was able to land more effective punches and kicks on their feet, and bloodied Trites up quite a bit. On the floor, both fighters had their moments, but the combination of Benoit’s submission attempts and big combinations were enough to earn a decision, and get him back on track for a title run.

Looking ahead, World Championship Fighting also announced a featured fight for WCF 8, which will take place this fall. Wilmington’s Dan Bonnell makes his return to the ring to take on the streaking Josh LaBerge in what promises to be an exciting match up. Stay tuned for big announcements about WCF 8 in the coming weeks.

UFC. A UFC pay-per-view in Boston?

It could happen — and probably will before too long, according to fighting insiders.

Mixed martial arts events are legal in Massachusetts; World Championship Fighting, a rough equivalent of baseball’s Triple-A level, competes in the state all the time. But UFC itself won’t compete anywhere it’s not officially regulated.
